Cara Magazine Cover - 80 Years of Aer Lingus

Illustration for the cover of the Aer Lingus in-flight magazine, Cara.

I recently completed a lovely commission for Cara Magazine, the inflight magazine for Aer Lingus. Art Director Clare Meredith (thank you Clare!) contacted me about doing the cover for a very special anniversary cover for Cara. This is Aer Lingus’ 80th year of flying the skies. This is also the first time Cara magazine has ever used illustration on the front cover so I was beyond excited to be commissioned and, as an Irish person who has regularly flown with the great Irish airline, I felt genuine pride to be involved. I was also hired by Aer Lingus to adapt to illustration to create Twitter and Facebook cover images for Aer Lingus' social media sites.
The magazine was on all Aer Lingus flights during April and May, with a potential audience of over 1 million people!
To celebrate the anniversary, the illustration includes the first Aer Lingus plane – the little “Iolar” and one of their modern fleet. I also included landmarks from some of the airline’s destinations.  As always, the work started with a sketch before moving into Illustrator to finish things off digitally.
Initial sketch ideas showing landmarks of some of the places Aer Lingus flies to.
